Cléo & Cloé

24h with my new niece (& her parents)

I love newborn days, you know that fourth trimester, when days are snuggly and memories are blurry.

So during my Summer trip to Europe this year, I took advantage that my dad had to drive back and forth to get his daughters to hitch a ride and get dropped in Aix-en-Provence to meet my brother’s fresh baby. I decided to forgo the Holga (you know, to travel light-er), and only took my Diana Mini and the Olympus OM2 for normal images – but only kind of, because I went for expired film I knew nothing about, of course. I took my cameras for myself, there was no brief, there were no expectations.

And the images are just like these days: soft, tender, slow, and hazy. I think they’re perfect!

Also, I decided to make them my monthly art lab piece, inspired by Imogen Cunningham, because the hands and eyes are rich, leading, and oh so expressive. Just like Imogen’s work.

Yes, because it was so hot on that day, the light was low (indoors mid-day or outdoors in the evening), but it was also beautiful, and the grain of the films I chose (Ilford HP5+, pushed one stop for good measure, and the expired Fujifilm Superia 800 that expired a while back, that I bought on a whim knowing nothing of its history, and that’s been sitting in my fridge for a couple of years waiting for the right special occasion) is truly gorgeous. Right up my alley.
